How Do You Meditate on the Word of God?

How Do You Meditate on the Word of God?

One of my readers recently submitted a great question: How do you meditate on the Word of God? I immediately realized that many other readers might have the same question, so I’m sharing my perspective and 5 steps to get you started today.

Meditating on the Word of God is a beautiful practice that can deepen our connection with Him and help us live each day more in tune with His grace and blessings. From a biblical perspective, meditation isn’t about emptying our minds but rather filling them with God’s truth and promises.

What the Bible Says About Meditating on God’s Word

In Joshua 1:8, we read, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Here, God tells us how to make our way prosperous and be successful in all areas of our lives, including our finances.

Psalm 1:2-3 also describes the blessings of meditation: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”

Meditating on God’s Word helps us become deeply rooted in His love, drawing nourishment from Him to thrive and flourish.

The word meditate in the Old Testament comes from the Hebrew word hagah, which means…

…to ponder

…to study

…to imagine

…to muse

…to contemplate

…to reflect

…to utter to yourself

Meditating on God’s Word rewires your brain by completely saturating your thoughts with His truths. It overrides the limiting beliefs that might hold you back from receiving God’s promises.

Albert Einstein wisely stated, “You can’t solve a problem with the ways of thinking that created it.” In other words, the thinking that got you where you are today will not get you where you want to go in your finances. That’s why you need to transform your thinking by renewing your mind with the Word of God.

We create many of our financial problems with our erroneous thinking about how money works. Operating out of ignorance causes us to make poor decisions and get into trouble. But by filling our minds with the Word of God—by meditating on it—we align our thoughts with the truth. It’s the truth that sets us free. We need to be set free from wrong thinking, worry, fear, and anxiety about our finances. We need to destroy those strongholds with the living power of the Word of God.

Meditating on God’s Word day and night teaches us to walk by faith, not by sight. We can become so consumed by the Word that nothing can bring us down. Instead, we respond to bills, late notices, or bad news with bold faith while standing firmly on the promises of God’s provision.

5 Steps to Meditate on God’s Word

1. Start with Prayer

Begin by inviting the Holy Spirit to guide you in your meditation. Prayerfully ask God to open your heart and mind to understand what He’s saying to you through His Word. “Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.” Psalm 119:18

2. Choose a Passage of Scripture

Select a verse that has meaning for you to meditate on in this season of life. Notice if the Holy Spirit keeps bringing a specific passage to mind. Read it slowly and reflect on each word, allowing the meaning to sink in deeply.

3. Focus and Reflect

Read the passage repeatedly, focusing on words or phrases that stand out to you. Ask yourself, “What is God revealing to me through this verse? How does this apply to my life right now?”

4. Write it Down

Prayer journaling is a powerful way to record what God speaks to you through His Word. Write down insights, feelings, and any impressions you’re getting. This process can become a beautiful conversation with God as He speaks to you through His Word.

5. Repeat, Memorize, and Revisit

Spend a few minutes memorizing the passage. Repeating the verse throughout your day helps keep your mind and heart focused on God’s truth. When we carry His Word with us, it becomes easier to draw on it when we need comfort in stressful circumstances. Revisit this same passage of scripture daily until it shifts your thinking patterns.

What Bible Verse Should You Meditate on for a Financial Breakthrough?

When I was in six-figure credit card debt all those years ago, I meditated on this verse every single day:

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19 NKJV

I poured over the words of that scripture over and over again, writing them out in my journal and looking up the Greek meaning of the words in a Bible concordance like this one. Until one day, I was convinced that God would truly provide for all of my needs. And He eventually did!

I recommend spending some time to find the verse God is speaking to you in this season. It may be more than one verse. Ask the Holy Spirit to tell you which scripture passage you should meditate on.

CONCLUSION: Seek the Provider, Not the Provision

Meditating on God’s Word is a sacred practice anchoring us in His promises and love. We want to approach it with a heart that yearns for more of the Giver, not just the gifts.

As you meditate, you’ll notice His truth becoming more real to you than your current circumstances. That’s when you know you’ve renewed your mind. This practice is about opening your heart to the goodness of God. When we face financial challenges, it’s comforting to know we can turn to Him, our Jehovah-Jireh, to help and deliver us from our financial struggles. Meditating on His Word day and night will get you there.
