24 Hygge Ideas for Better Sleep at Night

Finding it difficult to sleep at night? I’ve been there myself plenty of times. In today’s blog post, I’ve got you covered with 24 hygge ideas for better sleep at night.

Sleeplessness can be particularly challenging for women, especially when hormonal imbalances come into play. When I suffered from chronic fatigue several years ago, sleep became a major issue. I tried everything under the sun to help me sleep. My insomnia was so bad I was getting only one or two nights of sleep each week. Most days, I walked around like a zombie, and my energy was at an all-time low.

During the pandemic, I made it my mission to learn everything I could about getting healthy sleep. I completed a year-long health coach training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and other sleep-specific training.

I learned that Hygge, a Danish concept that emphasizes coziness and relaxation, can improve sleep quality. Calming the nervous system and an overactive mind before bed will yield positive results.

The most effective solution for better sleep is a multi-pronged approach. So let’s get started.

Let’s explore 24 hygge ideas for better sleep at night.

1. Create a Cozy Sleep Environment: Start by turning your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary, decluttering, and choosing soft, calming colors and elements for your bedding and decor.

2. Lower the room temperature: Lowering your room temperature aligns with your body’s natural cooling process at night, helping you fall asleep faster and stay in deeper, more restorative sleep stages. A cooler room also reduces restlessness, night sweats, and hot flashes.

3. Take a Warm Bath: A warm bath before bed relaxes your muscles and prepares your body for sleep. Add a cup of Epsom salt and lavender essential oil to your bath water for added benefit.

4. Sip on Herbal Tea: Teas such as chamomile, valerian root, or passionflower are known for their sleep-inducing properties. Don’t wait until bedtime; drink a cup or two of herbal tea throughout the day to begin the relaxation process early on.

5. Invest in Quality Bedding: High-quality sheets and pillows can make a world of difference. Opt for breathable, natural fabrics like cotton or linen.

6. Create a Reading Nook: Create a comfortable reading nook in your bedroom with a cozy chair and your favorite reading materials. Bedtime is also a great time to do some journal writing to process your day.

7. Dim the Lights: My husband laughs at me because I go around the house after dinner and lower all the lights. It helps my system begin to relax and unwind. Lowering the lights in your bedroom signals your body that it’s time to wind down.

8. Eat Foods for Sleeping: Did you know that some foods help with sleep? One time, when I was staying at a Hyatt Hotel, they had a nighttime menu with foods for better sleep. Try eating turkey, eggs, oatmeal, chicken, peanut butter, bananas, cherries, yogurt, and milk.

9. Get Daylight into Your Eyes: Did you know that getting morning daylight into your eyes prepares your body for sleep? Apparently, it helps regulate your body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, by signaling your brain that it’s time to wake up and be alert, triggering melatonin production for sleep 12-16 hours later. Fascinating, right?

10. Gratitude Journal: Writing in a gratitude journal helps you end the day on a positive note. Spending a few minutes writing down things you’re grateful for helps you focus on God’s blessings and brings closure to your day.

11. Hygge Pajamas: Invest in soft, comfortable pajamas that feel cozy and relaxing.

12. Prayer and Meditation: Read your favorite Bible verses and meditate on God’s love for you to quiet your mind and reduce stress. I keep a list of mine in the Notes app on my iPad and read them before bed.

13. Unplug: Turn off electronic devices (including your phone) at least an hour or two before bedtime to avoid the stimulating effects of blue light.

14. Relax by Candlelight: Light a few candles to create a Hygge ambiance to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the soft glow. I love the soft glow of these flameless candles.

15. Create a Consistent Sleep Time: Going to bed at the same time each night helps your system know when it’s time to sleep.

16. Eye Mask: Use a soft, comfortable eye mask to block out any light that might disrupt your sleep.

17. Cozy Socks: Slip into yummy, warm socks to keep your feet cozy.

18. Grainy Texture: Incorporate textures like plush blankets or soft rugs to add warmth and coziness to your bedroom.

19. Bedtime Story: If you’re feeling stressed, try watching a soothing video. Watching art classes on YouTube is extremely calming for me. Laura Horn is one of my favorite art teachers, and her teaching style always lulls me into a deep, calming state. Here is one of her videos, where she talks about the healing aspect of art.

20. Hydrate Mindfully: Most people do not drink enough water to stay hydrated all day. Drinking water with electrolytes has enormously impacted my overall well-being, including sleep. Reduce liquid intake 2-3 hours before bedtime to avoid waking up for bathroom trips.

21. Heating Pad: Use a heating pad on tense areas of your body, such as your neck or mid-section, to soothe muscles and promote relaxation.

22. Calm Evening Routine: Establish a calming evening routine to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down and sleep.

23. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the hours leading up to bedtime, as they can seriously disrupt sleep patterns.

24. Seek Professional Help: If insomnia persists, consult a healthcare professional for guidance and treatment options tailored to your specific needs.

Conclusion:

Incorporating these Hygge bedtime ideas into your night routine can help you reduce anxiousness and enjoy restful sleep. Remember, self-care and creating a cozy, nurturing environment can make all the difference in improving your sleep quality and overall well-being.

Here’s to sweet dreams!
