A Prayer for Peaceful Sleep with 13 Bible Verses

Today’s blog article, A Prayer for Peaceful Sleep with 13 Bible Verses, is Part 2 of a series on Getting Better Sleep.

In last week’s blog, I mentioned that getting better sleep is a multi-pronged approach. If you struggle with sleeplessness, don’t expect to try one new thing and hope to resolve your sleep issues overnight. Also, everyone’s needs are different, so what works for one person may not help another.
Getting your sleep back on track will be a trial-and-error process. But if you keep with it and do not give up, you’ll soon find a solution that works for you.
Please note: I am NOT a licensed medical professional or licensed health or nutritional expert. The tips I share here are what I’ve learned as a certified health coach and my personal experience overcoming chronic sleep problems.
Today, I’m addressing the spiritual aspect of sleep because everything in the physical realm often begins in the spiritual realm. In other words, if we want to eliminate the fruit, we have to go to the root, and that root is sometimes spiritual.
As I shared in my previous blog article, I have many years of experience in dealing with insomnia, which got worse when I entered peri-menopause and developed chronic fatigue syndrome. It continued off and on for the next several years.
One day, it occurred to me that God promises us “sweet sleep” (see Proverbs 3:24), which means His will for us is to sleep well every night. But the enemy seeks to destroy our sleep because he knows how the lack of sleep compromises our well-being.
When I started claiming sweet sleep as a gift from God, I got the revelation that He has already given me sweet sleep. It’s a done deal as part of the new covenant. My spirit man knows this but my flesh needs to get the message. That’s where meditating on the Word of God comes in.
As part of my bedtime routine, I meditate on a list of sleep scriptures (which you’ll find below) and sometimes I’ll pray this prayer:
A Prayer for Peaceful Sleep*
Father, thank You for peaceful sleep, and for Your angels that encamp around us who fear You. You deliver us and keep us safe. The angels excel in strength, do Your word, and heed the voice of Your word.
You give Your angels charge over me, to keep me in all my ways. I bring every thought, every imagination, and every dream into the captivity and obedience of Jesus Christ.
Father, I thank You that, even as I sleep, my heart counsels me and reveals to me Your purpose and plan. Thank You for sweet sleep, for You promised Your beloved sweet sleep. Therefore, my heart is glad and my spirit rejoices. My body and soul rest and confidently dwell in safety. Amen.
