Why Journaling is Considered Self-Care
Self-care is what we do take excellent care of ourselves, improve our lives, make us feel happier and healthier. Practicing self-care is good for our physical, mental, and emotional health.
When we add journaling to our self-care routine, we enhance our well-being in many ways.
4 Reasons Journaling Can be Good for Self-Care
Self-Reflection: It is a reflecting activity, improving your self-awareness, and letting you see where you want to make improvements in your life.
Stress Relief: You can do a brain dump, where you get all the stressful thoughts out of your head and onto paper, which can reduce the feeling of overwhelm.
Self-Expression: It helps you to vent in a safe, private space without fearing judgment.
Mindfulness: It gives you a few moments of peace and quiet, where you focus on yourself and how you are feeling.

Types of Journaling for Your Well-being
There are many types of journaling that can help with your well-being. Here is a quick rundown of some of the more popular types of journal writing.
Gratitude Journaling. A process where you focus on the blessings in your life, big and small, to help you shift from a negative mindset to a positive mindset. According to a 2003 study by Emmons and McCullough, keeping a daily gratitude journal leads to a number of mental and physical health benefits. This article, The Power of Gratitude Journaling explains the benefits of this type of journaling.
Stream of Consciousness. This is where you simply let the words flow onto the page without judging, criticizing, or censoring yourself. Instead, you’re just doing a brain dump, getting all your thoughts out of your head. Typically, you end up writing about many different things, going with the flow of your thoughts. Interesting insights can come from this type of journaling.
Goal setting and Vision Planning. Sometimes using your journal for things like setting goals or creatively visualizing your dreams can be motivating and empowering. You write about your dreams and goals as if they have already happened, which helps you gain clarity about what you truly desire for your life.

How to Turn Journaling into a Daily Self-Care Habit
If you want to use journaling as part of your self-care routine, here are a few things that can help you get started.
Start with morning pages. Morning Pages are a journaling technique introduced by Julia Cameron in her book, The Artist’s Way. This practice involves writing three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness writing first thing in the morning. It serves as a mental and emotional cleanse, helping to clear your mind of clutter before starting the day. First thing in the morning, write three full pages in longhand about anything that comes to mind. By incorporating morning pages into your daily routine, you can start each day with a clearer, more focused mind.
Set up your journaling space. Where you journal can be just as important as how you journal. You want this space to be quiet, private, and without distractions. It can be your bedroom, patio, kitchen table, or private office. It just needs to feel safe and calming.
Use journaling prompts. This is one of my favorite ways of journaling. If you are feeling stuck on what to write about, try using journal prompts. These are writing prompts or questions that give you a specific topic to write about.
