How to Receive the Blessings of God

How to Receive the Blessings of God

Sometimes we get so caught up in the busyness of life that we forget how to receive the blessings of God. Whether as work-at-home moms, driven professional women, or both, it’s helpful to remember that God longs to lavish us with His blessings each day. But we may first have to learn how to receive His overwhelming goodness.

What Are Blessings from God?

The blessings of God are expressions of His goodness and kindness to us, His children. The ultimate blessing, of course, being the gift of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But the blessings of God do not stop at salvation.

To understand the tender, loving kindness of the heart of God, we look at one of the most popular and widely recognized blessing verses in the bible, Numbers 6:24-26, often referred to as the Priestly Blessing. It goes:

The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.

I love how the Amplified Classic Edition gives us an even deeper sense of God’s goodness toward us:

The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).

How to Receive the Blessings of God Each Day

Years ago, I read Dr. Jerry Savell’s book, Every Day a Blessing Day and it helped me understand what it is to live a truly blessed life. It taught me how to live under an open heaven of blessings each day. Every Day a Blessing Day is a powerful infusion of mind-expanding, faith-exploding teaching to inspire you to expect God’s blessings in every area of your life by putting your trust and faith in God’s promises and being willing to receive the blessing of God even if you don’t’ think you deserve it.

But how do you do that?

Activate the Blessing of God with the Power of Your Words

how to receive the blessings of God

My husband gets a kick out of me because when I hear someone say something negative about themselves, my immediate response is, “Watch your words! Your words are powerful! Say what you want, not what you have.”

He’s heard me say this so much that now as soon as he says something negative, he immediately corrects himself by saying, “I know, my words are powerful.”

In Every Day a Blessing Day, Dr. Savelle discusses the power of your words, and explains it this way:

“If we want to activate the blessing then we must put a demand on it. And the way we do that is with our mouth.

In Proverbs 18:21 we read, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” What does this tell us? It literally means death can be produced by what comes out of our mouth or life can be produced by what comes out of our mouth. Our words are vehicles. They either carry life, or they carry death. The choice is ours.

God said, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing” (Deuteronomy 30:19). Notice how God connects life to the blessing and death to the curse. Life and blessing are on one side, and death and cursing are on the other side.

If life and death are in the power of the tongue, then blessing and cursing are also in the power of the tongue. James confirmed this when he said, “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not be so.” (James 3:10)

So, if we’re able to produce both blessing and cursing by what comes out of our mouths, then we need to examine what’s coming out of our mouths. (Taken from chapter 8: We Have a Part to Play, pages 140-141)

The Blessings of God Will Overtake You

God's blessings

When you understand God’s desire to bless you, you’ll find yourself being more intentional about speaking only words of blessing, which will affect every area of your life. God’s Word makes it clear that the primary way we activate the blessing is by decreeing it out of our mouth.

The Bible says, “Thou shall decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee” (Job 22:28). And, “
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof (Proverbs 18:21).

I have come to honor the Word of God with my mouth by seeking to let only words of blessing come out of it.
