How Gratitude Helps You Sleep Better

Did you know that gratitude helps you sleep better? It’s true. In this blog post, I’ll share the studies and benefits of gratitude and how you can combine gratitude with prayer to help you sleep better.

What is World Gratitude Day?

September 21st is World Gratitude Day, a global event that encourages us to reflect on the power of gratitude and its positive impact on our lives. It originated in 1965 at a Thanksgiving dinner in Hawaii. Over the years, it has grown into an international movement, reminding us of the daily transformative benefits of practicing gratitude.

World Gratitude Day is a beautiful opportunity to recognize how cultivating thankfulness, especially through prayer, can enrich our spiritual lives and enhance overall well-being.

For example, cultivating a calm, peaceful mindset can improve sleep, especially if you have an overactive mind like mine. When I focus on the things I’m grateful for, not just in a journal before bed but also in my thoughts when my head hits the pillow, I find I’m more likely to fall right to sleep.

Here’s something I read from therapist Amy Morin in her Mentally Strong newsletter earlier this week:

Gratitude isn’t just a mood booster; studies show that jotting down three things you’re grateful for before bed can actually enhance your sleep quality….here’s the best part: keeping a gratitude journal takes just a few minutes. But those few minutes can have a massive impact on your life. Why not give it a try for a week? See how it transforms your nights.”

Powerful, right?

A gratitude study headed by Robert Emmons, a leading scientific expert on gratitude, observed a group of women keeping a gratitude journal and doing gratitude exercises had elevated optimism, improved well-being, decreased blood pressure, and better sleep quality.

This is excellent news because keeping a gratitude journal is something anybody can do.

I’ve noticed that consistent gratitude journaling produces the most transformative results, which is why I created the So Very Blessed Christian Self-Reflection Gratitude Journal.
