How to Set Healthy Boundaries – 4 Simple Tips

A common question that comes up with coaching clients is how to set healthy boundaries. If you want to have a healthy relationship with yourself and others, you need healthy boundaries. If you’re a professional woman or an entrepreneur, setting firm boundaries around your time and energy is crucial to your success.
However, setting and sticking to boundaries can be difficult, especially for women because we feel guilty about sticking up for ourselves or upsetting other people. What if we say no to a potential client when they ask for a discount and then they don’t sign up for our program? Or what if a colleague asks us to do something that is not in alignment with our brand or mission?
In all my years of coaching, I have learned that it is better to stick to your boundaries and risk upsetting the other person than it is to give in and do something you don’t want to, because you’ll only end up regretting it later.

I’ve done A LOT of personal development work over the last several decades, so I consider myself someone who has no problem setting healthy boundaries. More recently, I had to practice my boundary setting skills when my mother passed away.
I was dealing with the onslaught of grief and roller coaster emotions while also planning a funeral. Quite simply, I had no bandwidth to deal with anything outside of the funeral arrangements and my emotions. That was literally all I could handle.
So I set strong boundaries around my time, energy, and focus. I gave myself plenty of space to just be with my emotions and to tend to my personal needs. It felt really good to be there in that way for myself. I had my own back. That’s what creating healthy boundaries does for you.
When you set healthy boundaries, it means you understand and know your limits. Boundaries help you improve the quality of your relationships. But more importantly, creating boundaries is foundational to practicing excellent self-care, especially as a professional woman.

Think about what gives you energy and what drains your energy. What makes you feel stressed and uncomfortable? What are you willing to tolerate and what things are not OK with you? Once you have a list of your limits, you’ll have a better idea of where you need to create boundaries.

Taking a stand for yourself by creating better boundaries means being able to say no without providing a reason. Have you noticed that when you want to say no to something, you feel like you need to give an excuse? And when you don’t, you feel guilty?

This may be a tough tip to follow if you’re not used to standing up for yourself, but you’ll be surprised how free you feel when you start saying no without explanation. It’s empowering.
