Journaling writing is my favorite tool if you want to transform your money story. Not only is it empowering, but it’s also an effective way of regulating your nervous system, which is an important practice for trauma survivors. The emotions around money seem to be more challenging for those with a history of childhood trauma.

While journaling is a simple process, it provides a deep level of introspection, resulting in transformation. It’s also a way to champion yourself, which builds self-love and confidence.

So many life changing insights and breakthroughs are possible simply by putting pen to paper.

Journaling to transform your money story is not a one-size-fits-all process. Your experience will be as unique as you are because everyone has their own money history to explore. Sometimes it’s not a very pleasant process either, as old baggage will surface in your awareness. But it is enlightening if you commit to keeping with it until you get a breakthrough.

If money brings up negative emotions for you, then I invite you to use the process of journaling to get curious and explore. Set aside some time, find a quiet place where you can be private and uninterrupted, then pull out your journal and write.

Here are a few of my favorite journal prompts to help you explore your money story.

Transform Your Money Story journal prompts:

🎔What was your experience with money in your household as a child?

🎔What behavior around work and money did you observe in your mother?

🎔What behavior around work and money did you observe in your father?

🎔Did you feel deprived as a child in any area of life? If so, what was that like? How does that show up in your life today?

🎔How would you describe your current relationship with money?

🎔As you look back over your most dominant money experiences, do you notice a theme or pattern?

🎔What emotion does money typically trigger for you? Shame, anxiety, fear, anger, resistance?

🎔How would you describe your boundaries around money?

🎔In what situations do you find it difficult to talk about money?

🎔If you had it to do over, what is one past money decision you would do differently today?

Without judgment, allow yourself to go deep with these journal prompts. Keep the pen moving for a good ten to fifteen minutes for each prompt. Notice what emotions come up and where you feel them in your body.

This is an opportunity to explore what’s there around money, and the story you tell yourself about it. Remember that as you journal, a small dose of curiosity will go a long way toward self-acceptance, transforming your money blocks, and helping you find your place of financial empowerment.

For me, the biggest breakthroughs happen as I continue to journal for several consecutive days, rather than just one session.
