How to Rewrite Your Childhood Money Story

In my book, Release Your Money Blocks, I talk about how to rewrite your childhood money story. I suggest a gentle but intentional process of self-reflection, journaling, and replacing inherited limiting beliefs with spiritual truths. The following ideas are a few of the examples.
Simple Steps to Rewrite Your Childhood Money Story
- Write a “money timeline” or autobiography: Begin by documenting the history of your experiences with money, starting with your earliest childhood memories. Reflect deeply on how your parents or caregivers handled the household finances, the feelings associated with your first memories of money, and the financial messages you absorbed from your community growing up.
- Examine your “worthiness wounds”: This one is huge. Look for patterns in your childhood where you may have experienced emotional neglect, deprivation, or conditional love. In the book, I explain that these experiences often plant seeds of unworthiness that can manifest in your adult life as negative financial habits, such as over-delivering, undercharging, or avoiding financial responsibility.
- Use journaling to surface hidden vows and beliefs: If you know me, you know I place a high value on the healing power of journaling. Your journal is a safe space to process the emotions tied to your past. Ask yourself what unspoken “agreements” you made about money (e.g., “money is scarce”) or what vows you took (e.g., “I’ll never…” or “I must always…”) and evaluate if they are still serving the woman you are becoming.
- Actively replace the old narrative: Once you have named the story you inherited, you can consciously create a new one. A practical exercise is to write down an old limiting belief, physically cross it out, and replace it with a Scripture-anchored truth. For instance, if your childhood story taught you that there is “never enough,” you can rewrite that narrative with statements like, “I am provided for by a loving Father,” “I don’t have to sacrifice my well-being to be financially secure,” or “my God always provides all my needs.”
- Reinforce your new story with daily declarations: Because your subconscious beliefs are deeply ingrained (strongholds), transforming them requires consistency. I want to encourage you to use the power of your words to speak positive, Biblically aligned affirmations out loud to renew your mind and cement your new, empowered, God-given financial identity.
Daily Affirmations for Your New Money Story
To reinforce the new money story you are creating, below you’ll find a powerful list of Biblically aligned affirmations. Speak these affirmations out loud daily. Hearing yourself declare God’s Word renews your mind so it aligns with His thoughts for you and builds your faith.
Here are some specific affirmations you can use, broken down by the areas they help heal:
Foundational Truths for Your New Story
If you are transitioning from a mindset of scarcity or struggle, start with these core declarations:
- “I am provided for by a loving Father.”
- “I can earn money with peace, grace, and joy.”
- “I don’t have to sacrifice my well-being to be financially secure.”
Affirming Your Identity and Worthiness
- “I am a daughter of the King, and He provides abundantly for all my needs.”
- “God is my provider, and I lack no good thing.”
- “I have the power to break free from financial limitations through Christ because I can do all things through Christ.”
Releasing Fear and Anxiety
- “I release all fear and anxiety about money, trusting in God’s provision.”
- “I choose faith over fear in every financial challenge I face.”
- “I walk in financial peace, knowing God is in control of my finances.”
Cultivating Wise Stewardship and Action
- “God has blessed me with wisdom to manage my finances well.”
- “I am a wise steward of the resources God has entrusted to me.”
- “I am confident in my ability to earn, save, and give generously.”
- “I am empowered to make wise and prosperous financial decisions.”
How to Put it into Practice
Pick a few affirmations that resonate most with your current struggles and incorporate them into a daily routine. You might try making a “Daily Three” habit: choose one truth confession from the list above, pair it with one thing you are grateful for regarding God’s provision, and then take one tiny, five-minute practical action with your money (like checking an account or paying a small bill).
The entire process outlined in my book is designed to walk you through a series of baby steps that you can implement consistently. No need for monumental upheavals or impossible-to-reach goals. That would only dysregulate your nervous system every time you thought about money. The goal is to learn to approach your relationship with money in gentle, doable steps that feel aligned with what God wants for you, which is complete freedom and abundance!
